Brandon Stanton is an American author and blogger who has taken hundreds of photos of New Yorkers and included bits and pieces about their life. Time has recognized him as one of “30 Under 30 People Changing the World“.This article provides all of the information on his life, career, and income.
Early Life
Brandon Stanton, who grew up in Marietta, Georgia, was born on March 1, 1984. The Internet holds no information about his parents, nor the fact whether or not he had any siblings. However, if this information ever leak to the public eye, you will be informed. After graduating from The Walker School, he studied history at the University of Georgia.
Career
What was once a hobby became a full-time profession after Stanton lost his job. He then gripped his camera and strolled the streets of downtown Chicago. Sometime after, he moved to NYC and made it his goal to photograph 10,000 people and plot them on a New York City map. He also posted the portraits of his fellow New Yorkers on a Facebook page he had started in November 2010, titled Humans of New York.
What were once tiny quotes under each picture grew to be full interviews. Just like the descriptions of the people, the page’s success grew. Around three years after the start of this journey, Stanton’s original book titled Humans of New York was published in October 2013.
The book was widely recognized. It made number 1 on The New York Times Non- Fiction Best Sellers and stayed on the list for another 26 weeks. The author also wrote another book with the same topic, titled Humans of New York: Stories. It was as successful as the first one.
During the summer of 2014, he had been given a task to travel to the Middle East and do the same thing he did in New York- photograph people and document what they had to say. It was a 50-day trip around ten countries. The following summer, he was invited to the same thing, now in Iran and Pakistan. To finish his stay in Pakistan with a cherry on top, Stanton funded over $2 million to help end bonded labor in the country.
He was even honored to interview the then-president of USA, Barack Obama, in the middle of the White House. The trip to Washington had been concluded with a campaign that raised almost $1.5 million.
To show his support for Obama, and use his voice for political purposes, Stanton called out Trump for his hateful speech full of “white supremacy” on Facebook. A day later, the post was shared almost 1 million times and amassed over 1.6 million likes.
As many times before, he managed to raise a significant amount of money and donate it to the people in need, when he posted stories and photos taken at the Pediatrics Department of Memorial Sloan Kettering Cancer Center in NYC. The campaign raised almost $4 million, used for pediatric cancer research.
His hard work was recognized by many and honored him with several awards. Some of the awards are the People’s Voice Award in 2013 and the James Joyce Award from the Literary and Historical Society of University College Dublin in 2014. But, the fact that he reached way higher than his original goal and traveled the world by doing what he loves is the best prize of all.As social media was his route to fame and success, we must note out that it is also a big part of his daily life and earnings. Over 892 thousand people follow his Twitter account as of early 2022.
Personal Life
The author of two best-selling works married his long-time girlfriend, Erin O’Sullivan, in 2017. Erin produced an episode of Celebrity Expose and had several minor roles in Nocturnal, Honey, I Shrunk the Kids: The TV Show, and Cold Blooded.
